City welcomes 19 graduates into Infrastructure Skills Development Grant Programme

The City of Cape Town’s Corporate Services Directorate, led by Alderman Theresa Uys, has proudly welcomed the appointment of 19 young exceptional graduates as part of its Infrastructure Skills Development Grant Programme. These graduates, hailing from diverse academic backgrounds, are expected to learn from and contribute significantly to the City's Infrastructure development initiatives.
‘The appointment of these 19 graduates into the City’s Infrastructure Skills Development Grant Programme is to enhance the City's capacity in training unemployed graduates, thus nurturing a pool of skilled professionals. The programme plays a vital role in equipping graduates with specific scarce skills, abilities, and knowledge. We will be empowering these youngsters with three-year contracts that will lay the foundation for them to register with statutory councils and bodies such as ECSA, SAGC, SACNASP and SACPLAN,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, Alderman Theresa Uys.
The City’s Infrastructure Skills Development Grant Programme (ISDG) attracted applications from more than 3 035 graduates. Of these, 116 applicants were shortlisted and taken through a rigorous recruitment process.
The City ultimately selected 19 young graduates who represent a diverse array of qualifications crucial for infrastructure development, including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Town Planning, Process Technology, Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Groundwater, Mechanical Engineering, Science GIS, and Chromatography.
The City will provide the graduates with the opportunity to learn from professionals within the organisation and gain work experience in research, planning, design, implementation, and management of infrastructure projects. These graduates hail from from areas across the metro including Khayelitsha, Athlone, Bellville, Mfuleni, Rosebank, Nyanga, Claremont, Kuils River, Delft, Mitchells Plain, Observatory, Brackenfell, Eikendal, Sunridge, Parklands and two are from as far as Ga-Mphahlele in the province of Limpopo and Butterworth in the Eastern Cape.

‘I am expecting a lot of growth from this programme. The City has got some very good training programmes and I look forward to being exposed to its many departments,’ said Ross Jacobs.
‘I hope to gain a lot of expertise and experience in the field of science,’ said Dailin Currie.
‘I am hoping to gain experience that will allow me to become a professional engineer,’ Lutho Ncayo.
‘My expectation from this programme is to become a confident town planner whilst working towards building an inclusive city,’ said Xolelwa Mqhoma.
